Role of the Patient Navigators
You may not have a lot of knowledge about your specific type of cancer, but you can expect to be contacted by a navigator within 48 hours of diagnosis to help you become more informed and empowered on your journey.
A UNC REX Cancer Center Patient Navigator will be with you during your entire cancer journey. Your cancer care team creates an individualized plan for your cancer treatment – and our patient care navigators explain the big picture while keeping track of the small details.
Patient navigators offer a variety of care management services, including serving as:
- A liaison between you and your doctors and your surgeons
- An educator to teach you and your family about your cancer type and your treatment options
- A troubleshooter to mitigate any delays or obstacles to patient care
- A resource coordinator to direct you and your family to support groups and services, including referrals to social workers and dietitians
